Explaining concepts in simple ways by using clear language, this introductory book of functional grammar has tamed the wild and sophisticated concepts of systemic functional grammar. Reading it, as a result, you'll enjoy every piece of food of thought contained in each chapter. This book is really suitable for and recommended to those who want to quickly understand systemic functional grammar. I believe that teachers will find it so helpful that their overwhelming tasks when in class will no longer an everlasting burden, but will rather become a joy of journey in making their students critical language users.
Professor E. Aminudin Aziz, Linguistics Studies,
Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia.

Functional grammar is not an easy subject to grasp for most teachers of a second or foreign language. It is a form of grammatical description originated by Michael Halliday who firmly believes that language is a network of interrelated sets of options for making meaning and that grammar is described as systems not as rules, on the basis that every grammatical structure involves a choice from a describable set of options. Therefore, we certainly welcome any effort to make such a difficult subject easily accessible to those who need it as the basis for implementing the concepts and principles in their daily, professional endevors. We welcome this book which provides an excellent, informative introduction to the vexed question of functional grammar.
Professor Emi Emilia as she always does succintly puts forward in a theory-to- practice fashion a balanced and accessible overview of such issues commonly dealt with in functional grammar as fundamental categories for a theory of grammar, basic principles and notions in FG, the mood and modality system, and the transitivity system. Teachers of English and of other languages could take the benefit out of this book, especially when genre-based approach to language teaching is adopted, the basis of which is functional grammar.
Professor Fuad Abdul Hamied,
President of the Association of Teaching English as a Foreign Language in Indonesia (TEFLIN).
